I know taking on alternate names for a gay identity was very big in Victorian England. And I’ve know older gay men in the US who knew of or practiced the fashion a long time ago. Maybe 1940s and 50s?

But I think the practice (which overlapped with trans people taking on feminine names) has pretty much died out.

With much less need for stealth, I guess the impulse to take on an alias is lesser than it was.
