I know many women who call themselves cis. I work with queer writers every day, and I sometimes work with cis/straight writers. Most of the writers I work with every day are women. Often as not, they write explicitly (at least sometimes) that they are cisgender.

I used to write an advice column. Young women would sometimes write in. Often, they would describe themselves as cisgender, probably to help me understand their question. (Hi, I'm a cisgender, bisexual college student in Connecticut, and I'm having a problem with my current boyfriend, who has some pretty crazy ideas about bisexuality...)

In my circles, cis is just an ordinary, useful descriptor. Of course, not everyone moves in queer circles like I do, but really... the term isn't that unusual. Among young people, I find it's pretty common.

If somebody moves in circles where cis is perceived as an insult, the probable transphobic nature of of those circles has to come into question.
