I keep bird feeders out regularly all year round, and even up here in the Great Frozen North we have plenty of songbirds sticking around through blizzards and deep freezes. Two devoted cardinal pairs visit my feeders several times a day.
When I say devoted, I mean if you spot one of them, look sharp because its mate is close by.
If you spot two males, look sharp because drama may be about to ensue. 🤣 "This is MY feeder! Mine and the wife's! Get your scarlet-feathered intruder self over to the feeder on the other side of the house. And take your wife with you!"
"Oh, yeah? You and whose army, bub?"
That sort of thing. While the cat watches with a keen eye in case their bickering prompts them to drop their guard. She's never caught a cardinal yet, but she lives in hope.
So yes, all that to say I think you really have stumbled across a vast, little-known population of gay cardinals. Who knew!?
I mean, surely those catalog purveyors know of what they speak, er ... sell.
And gay cardinal bars in church? Why ever not? It's a lot warmer inside, and I hear communion wafers offer great avian nutrition.
