I hope we can all use this to begin to understand how legal conservatorships in the United States are often very problematic, especially when elders are involved.

There’s a whole industry dedicated to enriching conservators of people declared incompetent to look after their own best interests. Horror stories abound. Conservators drain bank accounts, deny independent living arrangements, and otherwise control every aspect of the lives of people who want to make their own decisions and often are capable of making their own decisions.

Not being famous, most of these people never end up championed in the press, and it’s tragic.
