I hope also that the priority of refugees will not be forgotten. The Trump administration has made applying for asylum in the United States virtually impossible no matter how great the need. We need to raise quotas and give immigration courts new marching orders.
I raise this partially in the context of humanitarian crises underway in a few parts of the world where LGBTQ people are being heavily persecuted. UNHCR refugee camps in Kenya are overwhelmed with gay and transgender asylum seekers, and most of the world has declined to help resettle them, Canada being a notable exception.
The US, which has never done a good job evaluating LGBTQ asylum claims, has now stopped accepting LGBTQ asylum seekers from anywhere.
It’s time to fix this, and we don’t need to Senate to do it.
