I haven't seen anything like this since Anita Bryant and the founding of the Moral Majority in the 1970s. Certainly, Republican apathy toward AIDS was a huge problem later, and public fear of AIDS was pretty bad, but ... Even during the peak of the AIDS fear mongering I never saw levels of hatred quite like this.
