I have to ask myself if Chappelle even knows that it's young queer activists in New York City pressuring LGBTQ organizations to keep focus on the racism of the New York City Police Department. How quickly national attention faded after the summer of 2020 and the tragedy of George Floyd. Queer people in New York City are some of the only people insisting that focus remain intense and meaningful. Witness Heritage of Pride's decision a few months ago to bar the NYPD from all Pride events, giving them five years to get their racist act together. Witness Reclaim Pride and Act Up protesting weekly throughout the summer and into the autumn against racist police brutality, often suffering brutality as a result of their protests.
Are some white queer people racist? Of course. Plenty of white people in the United States are racist. But just as plenty of queer people aren't white, most of the organized queer movement today is led by young people who don't tolerate racism. Hell, much of the leadership isn't white, something I don't suppose Chappelle even knows.
Just as I'm hoping he doesn't know what he's endorsing when he endorses TERFs. His "Team TERF" is particularly toxic in the UK where gender-critical feminism as its more commonly today, roared to popularity a few years ago, encouraged of course by JK Rowling.
Roaring in with that transphobic ideology is a wave of street violence, a rolling back of civil rights for transgender people, and increasing mental health problems including suicide.
I'd like to think Chappelle hasn't done his reading, doesn't know that, isn't aware that the same ideology is creeping into the United States and that we may well go down that same road.
But plenty of people have done that reading and it sure would be nice if they introduced those ideas into the conversation.
