I have to admit I wasn’t inclined to read your article when I saw the title. As a very progressive Democrat, I have little love for many of the leading figures in the Lincoln Project. Nor do I think they did a particularly good job convincing Republicans not to vote for Trump.

But you make a solid case for fighting for the soul of the Republican Party, which at the moment seems solidly dominated by Trumpism.

As much as I hate the idea, it’s simply true that many Republicans will never be able to bring themselves to vote for a Democratic candidate. Not even if their ideology is closer to the Democrat running than to the Republican. It’s a tribal thing, I guess.

So if the Lincoln Project can work as a moderating force in the Republican party, I’m all for it. I mean, the Republicans had the Tea Party. They’ve had Trump’s whatever it is.

Why not a movement of conservative or moderate Republicans who support American values that are not cruel and reactionary?

As you say, such a movement would be good for all of us.
