I have to admit I was pretty shocked when I opened up the Medium editors recommendations last week and saw that they had not chosen to recommend a single story about abortion, women's rights, or LGBTQ equality, all three of which are in crisis in the United States right now, particularly in the last couple weeks, and all three of which are highly interrelated.

When I saw the top story Medium editors recommended was by a famous white author who reaches millions of people without Medium, which addressed the subject of tractors in Ukraine, I rolled my eyes.

I mean, I have nothing against this author. I buy his novels, and I sometimes read his articles on Medium. They're good and interesting.

But that tractor story could not possibly have been last week's most important story. No way, not with everything else going on.

Then I scrolled down looking for recommended articles about women's rights and LGBTQ equality, because I knew they would have to be near the top of the list given current events.

Bupkiss. Nada. Nary a word.

I was so shocked I even mentioned it in the Slack group for Prism & Pen.

Somebody remarked that this is what it means to be marginalized. This is what it is to have your severe existential crises ignored by the powerful or privileged.

All I could say was ... "Exactly."
