I grew up presuming the term "white trash" derived from racism. As a 12-year-old boy living in rural Alabama, when I heard the term "white trash," I took it to mean people who were as undesirable or low as Black people, with the presumption of course that that was the natural state of Black people.

I think without racism against Black people, "white trash" would not have existed as a descriptor.
