I grew up in Baptist churches. I do understand that a tiny minority of Baptists are decent people. But like all Evangelical Christians, they are overwhelmingly arrogant and cruel to people who disagree with them.
They are also overwhelmingly and wilfully ignorant. Ask any Baptist (in the U.S.) if the evolution of species happens. You'll be hard pressed to find a Baptist who will affirm the findings of science. They favor thought control.
Facts and data do not matter to them.
I wouldn't care about that ... except that that these shockingly ignorant people are extraordinarily powerful.
Who's trying hard to suppress the true history of racism in the United States? Who's working their asses off to stop kids from reading about gay people like me?
Baptists, of course.
Hell, I wrote a story a couple weeks ago about a private Christian school whose administrators tried to force a lesbian couple to break up weeks before they graduated, threatening them with loss of their diplomas and subsequent loss of their university careers if they didn't obey.
Baptists.
Obviously, the behaviors I cite above shock and morally outraged decent people. But more than that, the behaviors are cultish.
It's all a cult, man, as I originally wrote, meaning that I just don't see a significant difference between much mainstream religion and the groups they label as cults.
