I got into a word tussle with a Christian like that just the other day. He wrote an article to say that Christianity gets a bad rap because atheists and the media misrepresent what Christianity is really about. He then went on to quote a few Bible verses to show everybody how wrong we are and how wonderful Christianity is, how it is all about love.

When I responded to tell him (empirically) that Christianity is usually about hate, judgmentalism, and hurting people, he segued into some sort of weird theological discourse and then tried to convert me. All the while either ignoring or brushing aside my empirical observations about how horrible Christians usually are. That really didn't matter to him. He just doesn't care and still insists that people have it all wrong about Christianity.

Then he ended up calling me a child who didn't get a the tricycle I wanted for Christmas, and finished up by dismissing me as mentally ill.

I know some wonderful Christians who really do center love and charity in their worldview. But they are rare exceptions, and they almost never hesitate to agree that most Christians are terrible people. Honesty is the beginning of decency, after all.
