I go for it, because often dashes work better than semicolons separating phrases or clauses that already contain commas.

What I mean by ‘work better' is that they draw the reader’s eye more naturally and help create clarity.

I want readers to know what I mean, after all — to know what my sentence would sound like if I were actually reading it out loud. Sometimes a dash is just what the doctor ordered.
