I follow Catholic Church news pretty closely in connection with writing about LGBTQ issues, and as I read your piece, I remembered two articles I’ve read recently about divorcing the Catholic Church. You might find them interesting!

By the way, that church tithe in Germany, where I used to live, applies to other recognized churches too, primarily to the Lutheran church, which is the largest church in Germany. Funding churches this way is not an uncommon practice in northern Europe. Increasing numbers of Germans, though, are formally severing ties with any church. Even in Italy, the trend of leaving the Catholic Church is picking up.
