I finally started watching Game Of Thrones the other day. I was holding out because I wanted to finish reading the books first, but because it's become increasingly obvious George Martin is not going to finish writing the book series, I gave in.
I've been really interested to see how the film adaptation treats sexism and the idea that women exist for men's pleasure. Since the book series is set in a world modeled on medieval society, sexism is baked in. As I read, I sometimes felt Martin even glorified it a bit. Although strong women and girls are central characters, I got the feeling he was sometimes writing for men who got off on the idea of a world where many women existed for the pleasure of and the service of men. All the brothel scenes and rape scenes, etc. I don't want to piss his fans off, I understand that he was trying to create a fully realized universe, it's just a feeling I got while reading.
The feeling I get from the TV series is quite different. The writers haven't changed the fact that women in that society often exist for the pleasure of men, but they seem somehow to have made it more horrible. Less glorified.
But then I asked myself if that's just my personal reaction. Do other men still enjoy fantasizing about that kind of world? I don't know. Clearly the experiences on Facebook you're writing about indicate that many men continue to feel sexually entitled toward women.
Is this so baked in that we're going to have to deal with it for generations still? I hope not.
Sorry for the loosely connected ramble!
