I feel so fortunate to be able to read your stories and receive an education in China's queer artistic history. I read almost constantly, yet this is the first time I've heard anything about this groundbreaking film or the novel that preceded it.

In some ways, the film reminds me of my own environment growing up in the United States as a closeted gay person many decades ago. We've made so much progress since then, but so much work remains to be done.

It's films like this that can remind us all how much we have in common even as we are diverse and different.
