I don't think they technically hibernate in the sense of dramatically lowering their metabolism. From what I've read, they hole up in their nests where they've stored lots of food, and they pretty much sleep the winter away. Every now and then if it gets warm enough and the sun shines, you might see them out for a little stroll. But when the wind howls and blows the snow around, they're tucked snugly away.
