I don't think historical critical scholars would endorse your statement here. Historical Jesus appeared to either believe he was the Messiah or that he was announcing the impending coming of the Messiah, who would be a political leader defending Israel and destroying the Roman Empire.

This is almost certainly why the Romans executed him, not because they were afraid of that, but because they didn't like that sort of rabble-rousing.

The idea that Jesus was apolitical as simply not supported by the facts. He wanted the Jewish people to return to honoring the law (the way he saw it) to usher in a new world order.

Certainly, honoring the law for him involved loving one's neighbor as oneself, but that was far from the totality of his teachings.

Modern Christians get that wrong all the time. Ask any serious New Testament scholar.
