I don’t think “complicated” is that right word. Little Richard became in the last few years a toxic homophobic bigot who used Christianity to belittle, shame, and condemn LGBTQ people.

I don’t know his music, so I can’t comment on that. I’ve never been much of a music person.

But I know his pronouncements and I know his judgments. I know he was a virulent homophobic bigot. I don’t know if he always was, but I know that’s what he became.

So I don’t think “complicated” is enough to describe him.

If some popular cultural figure revealed later in life that they were a racist, I don’t think we would overlook such a thing. We would acknowledge that figure as a truly horrible person.

We must be not be shy about proclaiming that Little Richard was a equally a truly horrible person. I don’t know exactly when he decided to become a homophobic bigot, but we must not cover.

We must not cover up that he died an evil man.
