I don’t know for sure what motivates the German Bishop’s Conference to be such a force of decency in the world, but they increasingly impress me as fundamentally good and moral people.

They stand in diametric opposition to the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, who are for the most part disgustingly evil. They actually tried to intervene with Congress last fall to kill a federal suicide hotline on the sole grounds that the hotline reaches out specifically to LGBTQ people. I can’t wrap my mind around how the US bishops can be that viciously evil. But the facts speak for themselves; they are.

And now it turns out that the whole time their top clerical administrator was hot and heavy on gay sex apps and attending gay bars and bath houses. The height of hypocrisy.

Having lived in Germany for years as a young man, I suspect the Nazi era has encouraged deep introspection in the bishops — as it has in my German friends.
I wish they could do something to encourage the American bishops to stop being such forces for evil and cruelty.
