I don't have any idea where people get the silly notion that the ten commandments are the basis of European and therefor American law.

I mean, do people even read them? They're primarily about forcing the worship of a particular God enforcing the observance of particular religious practices.

And long before anyone in Europe knew anything about Judaism, systems of law were already in place that evolved from completely different sources.
