I don't find that to be at all true. I was raised an Evangelical, though I am now an atheist and a gay man who opposes Evangelical practices and teaching. But I can assure you that Evangelicals spend a great deal of time reading the Bible, and even memorizing it. As an early teenager, I memorized and recited two (small) books of the New Testament. Reading the Bible is a central element of being an Evangelical Christian.
