I don't care if people were massively upset. People should be massively upset when their worldviews are challenged. All people of good will ought to work to massively upset those people who hold toxic views about sexuality and religion.

No religion ought ever to be (pardon the pun) a sacred cow.

No religious believer ought ever to be indulged by treating them as if their beliefs, even when they are harmful and absurd, deserve respect and deference.

Muslims and Christians constantly criticise me as a gay advocate for pointing out that their religious ideas are fucked up nonsense. They insist that I (and many others) extend artificial respect to their ideas.

Hell, no.

Religious idea must be extended not one whit more respect than any other human idea. If they’re nonsense, call them nonsense. If they result in harm, point out that harm. Hold those ideas (and sometimes those people) to relentless and unyielding criticism.

Nobody was hurt by Hadith passages being quoted. Literally nobody got hurt. Instead, people are demanding that their religious ideas be afforded undeserved respect.

It’s literally no different from when some censorious Christians had hissy fits over the Broadway musical “Jesus Christ Superstar” and the Monty Python classic “Life of Brian.” Oh, how they cried out their offended pain!

Should we have indulged their claims of blasphemy and their outrageous demands to censor those works of art? Of course not. Because religious ideas deserve zero special treatment.

Any religious believer who feels offended by any work of art or media already has a perfect solution to their offense: don’t watch or listen.

Anything more than that is utterly unreasonable.
