I didn't read Rules for Radicals until the early 2000s, after my Act Up days, but when I did read it, I was struck by how much of what we did in the 90s seemed deeply informed by the writing. I later learned that Ann Northrup (among other Act Up leaders) was a professed Alinsky admirer. Ann strategized Act Up's public, media face through most of the early to mid 90s — as much as anyone could while herding cats, that is. I'm fascinated to see your take, and to think about how Ann's work (which I often had close experience with) must have owed some connection to Alinsky.
Thanks for this very interesting look at a seminal book about radical organizing!
