I caught the end of the Woolworth's lunch counter era in New York City in the 1990s. I lived almost directly across the street from the Woolworth at 8th avenue and 23rd Street. The lunch counter didn't do as much business as it used to, but it was still there, and my regular was a patty melt with fries. I say regular, though I didn't stop in all that often. Maybe once a month? I preferred more adventurous street food if I were in the market for a an inexpensive lunch. That Woolworth closed a few years after I moved to the neighborhood. A shame, really! Though I guess our American tastes simply moved on. I check Google maps last night as I was editing this and "my" Woolworth is now a dollar store.
