I can relate to this powerfully, because when I was a child, my name was Jamie. Even though my legal name was James, I shared it with my dad and grampa, who were called Jimmy and Jim, respectively, in the family. Nobody ever called me James until I started school. When teachers called me that, I felt alien, like they insisted using a name for me that I didn't identify with or even want. I didn't understand why they wouldn't call me Jamie, which was (as far as I was concerned) my real name, and they only name that I felt connected to. That might sound like a small issue to some, but the teachers who would not use my "real" name with me ensured that I had a hard time connecting with them or feeling anything more than an alien relationship with them.
