I can relate personally to this also from my own experiences raising a foster son with my partner. Neither my partner's family nor mine ever considered him or treated him like a real member of the family. It's not that they were hostile to him. He was just invisible to them — like they didn't know how to react to the situation so they'd just ignore him.

Our created queer family and became his extended family. Our biological families did not.
