I can certainly understand that! It doesn't sit all that well with me either. The reason is that many of us queer people feel an enormous amount of pressure from our own communities to "look" a certain way, to be "cool" a certain way. To conform to a certain esthetic.
Hell, we write about it a lot! I can't even begin to estimate the number of articles we've published in Prism & Pen over the years about unrealistic gay beauty and/or fitness ideals, and that's just one issue, for starters.
So, I don't mean to disrespect this guy at all. I'm sure his heart's in the right place. But I think he's reinforcing a certain expectation of conformity, by calling his own personal style choices "queer."
But of course they aren't queer. Because personal style choices don't make a person queer.
You know, I think we queer people have got enough on our plates already without having to deal with that kind of presumption.
Even when the presumption is being dished out by a really nice person and effective ally.
