I came up in Baptist circles before the whole Exodus thing got really big, but I did manage to catch all the fun of the Anita Bryant era. Sigh. Before her, most church people in my family’s circle dealt with gay issues by pretending they didn’t exist. Funny, there was a lesbian couple in our church that everybody carefully pretended were just roommates.

Sadly, that era ended, and by the time I was a late teen, being gay in the church was a very, very big deal.
