I agree with you that our nudity taboos are pretty ridiculous. I was sunbathing once at Race Point on the tip of Cape Cod on a fairly empty beach. A family of German tourists lugged a picnic basket down to the beach while I was there, spread out some blankets, and then began to change into swimwear. In the open, which is pretty common for my experience in Germany and other parts of Europe where I have lived.

Because I speak German, I figured I'd better warn them that the U.S. is different. So I walked over to where they were beginning to set up their lunch, and after exchanging pleasantries let them know that federal law enforcement agents have been known to arrest people at Race Point for nudity, that they should be careful to change in the beach house above the beach.

They looked at me like I was a space alien. I apologized for our silly American prudishness, which thawed their attitudes, but I agree with them that many Americans have ridiculous attitudes about bodies and nakedness.
