I agree, with the caveat that knowing what any politician actually thinks by listening to a public performance is probably unrealistic. Public dishonesty has always been a primary requirement for a successful political career.

So knowing what these politicians actually thought is probably impossible, but understanding what they wanted the public to think is at least a useful proxy.
