I absolutely agree with your anger, and you're right to be angry. But I should point out that plenty of white Americans like me, who read the books before the films came out, always knew Roo was meant to be Black.

A bunch of loud, racist assholes got angry, and that's deplorable, but I don't think that generalizes to all Americans.

I watched plenty of interactions on social media at the time, and lots of Americans were telling the people who were upset about Roo being Black to shut up and sit down.
