I absolutely agree it’s really important to tell these stories. Even though I’m white, I was once driving a work truck in Detroit filled with Black people. We were visiting a plastics factory north of Detroit to pick up some samples for my business. Then we were going out for pizza and burgers.
Just after we crossed 8 Mile Road and left Detroit proper, an officer pulled us over and ticketed me for “rolling through” a stop sign I absolutely stopped completely at.
He look really surprised when he came up to the window. I’m pretty sure based on the work truck and based on the fact that four Black people were in the truck with me, he assumed I must have been Black too.
Every Black person I know in Detroit knows you’re at risk for being pulled over as soon as you cross 8 Mile Road into the white suburbs.
This is real and it happens a lot.
