How to respond to things like this has always been a tough question to answer. By coincidence this morning, I read about a college soccer player in New Hampshire who got called faggot during a game by an opposing player.
To be clear, this was not some generic insult. His opponent called him a faggot because he’s out and open about his sexual orientation.
The New Hampshire team with the openly LGBTQ player went on to shut out the team with the homophobic player, which is great as a response. But … it’s interesting that the homophobic player’s university refuses to say if or how they have punished the player. They issued a generic statement that could mean literally anything, that used a lot of words to convey zero information.
To this day, the onus is on LGBTQ people to figure out how to respond to open slurs.
