How fascinating! My own Irish ancestors had their pagan religious practices wiped out, mostly quite violently, but some elements of it seem similar to what you're describing.
I'm not sure why, but much Irish mythology survived. My own family name Finn refers back to ancient Irish mythology.
Fairies are perhaps the most popular remnant of Irish mythology, though not too many people realize where they come from. Still, it's nice, and maybe a bit awe-inspiring, to be able to connect with cultural touchstones that go back millennia.
I hope ancient Slavic mythology can be reconstructed and preserved as much as possible.
