Hi Allie Long,
As a gay man who was raised as an evangelical Christian, I found myself nodding along as I read about your experiences.
While there are significant differences between our experiences, there are so many similarities. Personally, even after I gave up the habits of faith, it took me a very long time to get over the ingrained thought patterns and reactions. It took years for burnt-in neural circuits to rewire, as it were.
In some ways I resent the way the church stole my adolescence from me, stole a sense of healthy, wholesome sexuality.
In other ways, I’d just so profoundly grateful that I eventually escaped the toxity.
Thanks for telling your story.
