Here’s one I witnessed. I was drinking a beer on my white friend’s front porch (in their very white suburb) when the new neighbors walked up to say hello. A young Black couple with two little children in hand.

“Welcome!” said my friend. “Can I get you guys a beer or a pop?”

A few minutes later, drinks passed around, he said, “After you guys moved in, we were so happy to find out you were professionals.”

I about melted into the concrete of the porch. I confronted my friend later about what he said, but he was never able to recognize why it was such a racist statement. “But I drank beer with them!” he protested.
