Hear hear! This is a serious problem with people on the left in the United States too. People on the left often lampoon conservative politicians on social media by mocking behavior that is supposedly queer. The people doing the mocking claim that they're simply highlighting hypocrisy, but I don't think they understand how toxic their dissemination of stereotypes actually is.
Because their "jokes" would not land if the stereotypes didn't make people uncomfortable.
I'm thinking of the closeted gay US senator Lindsey Graham, whose legislative priorities are deeply homophobic and damaging. Graham never met an anti-queer law he couldn't wholeheartedly support.
Lots of people mock him on social media for his supposedly effeminate mannerisms and speech patterns, and I often wonder what those people think they're accomplishing by reinforcing the appropriateness of mocking queer people.
