Hear hear! I live in rural western Michigan and schools around here have been closing off and on ever since the shooting in southeast Michigan’s Oxford. Threats keep getting made on TikTok and elsewhere, and students are scared to death. So are their parents.
But you know what? Many of those parents are armed to the teeth with assault weapons, like the parents of the shooter at Oxford. America’s gun problem has soared out of control as people have fetishized guns designed to kill people. Never in our history have guns been so omnipresent in our society.
These parents are scared, but they will never vote for gun control measures. They believe owning more guns is a solution and not the core of the problem.
In my tiny village of under 400 people, where people don’t even lock their doors at night, where there is no history of gun violence in living memory, the members of the local Baptist Church open carry guns to worship services. They sing hymns and pray with assault pistols strapped to their hips.
They say they’re right to be armed at all times is sacred and critical. They don’t seem to have any awareness that the proliferation of guns in society leads to more gun violence.
This is a new thing under the sun, and I believe it’s a sign that things are going to get much worse before or if they get better.
