Hear hear! We all need heroes, don't we? I was a baseball nut as a kid, and long before my baseball obsession faded, I knew I was gay. I was deeply ashamed of myself for that.
What a difference it would have made if one of my baseball heroes had come out!
Of course, I realize how hard it is for athletes to come out. I corresponded a little with Josh Cavallo after he came out, and he wrote that it's the scariest thing he ever did.
Athletes, even quite famous ones, are just people, despite that we want to see them as heroes. So asking them to be heroic about their queer status can be a big ask that might simply be too much for some of them.
But still, Josh did it. And others can too!
Here's to true heroism!
