Having lived in urban centers most of my life, only recently returned to my rural roots, I can relate to so much of this.

Not to put too much of a drama-queen spin on things, but farmers are screwed, hurting just as badly or more than former members of America’s industrial boom.

People in the part of Michigan where I live now used to be prosperous. You can see it in the elaborately built, large farm homes. You can get a sense of recent decay just by driving through any village or small town.

What were once thriving little centers of humanity and commerce are now sad and often boarded up.

Just about nobody makes a living farming anymore, even though most people here used to. People scramble from low-paying job to low-paying job to subsidize the farming that if they still do, they do for love and not for money.

Big Ag owns just about everything profitable. Farmers who participate in seed-growing programs feel like sharecroppers, eking by on miserly payments.

Chicken farmers? They can barely make a living even as the big chicken corporations make a killing.

Oh, and all those Trump subsidies? They aren’t finding their way down to actual farmers here, they’re going to people in suits in offices in cities who called farmers “agricultural workers" and pay them like Uber drivers.

But people out here voted for Trump anyway. Because nobody else is even pretending to care about them.
