Having grown up in the Evangelical world, I can testify to how exclusionary and “exceptionalist” it is. Evangelicals see themselves as members of a small minority of good people, surrounded by the evil and sin of the majority. Love for people they don’t consider to be Christians (which is almost everybody) plays only the tiniest role in their faith. Their love extends to evangelism, but that’s the extent of it. They spend much more time emphasizing their own “holiness” and condemning everyone else.
