Having been born and raised in red state America, then having spent most of my adult life in liberal urban bubbles before retiring back to rural red state America, I have to say some of my perceptions match yours.
People out here really do look at blue state liberals as fundamentally un-American. They will tell you so, using words like traitor and treasonous.
A group of them near me conspired to kidnap the governor, for heaven’s sake. An elected sheriff from not too far from me went on the public record supporting their right to make a “citizens arrest” on the grounds of the governor’s “treason.”
People up here fly Confederate flags even though local cemeteries are filled with bodies of Union soldiers. Those flags are saying something: “We are patriotic Americans, much more American than the people we oppose, who should probably go back to whatever country they or their ancestors came from.”
