Great article, thanks! This is a particularly appropriate time, I think, for celebrating All in the Family and The Jeffersons. Norman Lear produced both shows, and he passed away just a few days ago. He was a television and progressive-values pioneer whose work had enormous impact on U.S. culture.
You might be interested in another queer character who appeared in All in the Family, a drag queen named Beverly La Salle, who was played by an actor who really was a drag queen in San Francisco.
