Great article, Maya Strong!
Don’t even get me going on the conservative Christian concept of ‘purity’ with respect to sex. It’s such a loaded term.
It’s value-judgement in a small descriptive box. What’s the opposite of pure? Contaminated? Dirty? Untouchable?
As theologian Jonathan | sex & theology has been pointing out in a series of articles recently, contemporary Christian ideas about purity are rooted in profound misunderstandings of ancient Hebrew ritual purity law.
In my opinion, one of the worst legacies of Christianity is the “dirtying” and shaming of sexuality.
We need to break out of those boxes and appreciate sexuality as one beautiful part of being human.
I don’t want a gold star either. I want intimacy and sexual connection sometimes, and I don’t think the Purity movement has any idea about that basic human need.
