“Go back to changing diapers.” It’s funny how recognizable that sentiment is to me. It used to be so common and so out in the open.
The sad thing is that the sentiment hasn’t died away so much as it’s been buried. Patriarchy, male supremacy, and sexism boil below the surface of our culture. Much of our politics is colored and flavored by it.
When I wrote that piece about Quentin Crisp and sharing stories among generations, this is partly what I meant. You and I are old enough to remember when overt sexism shouted in a grocery store was ordinary — more likely to intimidate the receiver then shame the sender.
Sharing stories like that really matters.
And thanks so much for writing about Molly. What a cool human being!
