Gloria Bates, one of the bedrock principles of liberal democracies like the United States is protection of the rights of minorities from the “tyranny of the majority.”
Market forces have next to no power to protect minorities from abuse, given that most markets (obviously) are driven by majorities.
If the pre-1964 Civil Rights Act South had continued on uninterrupted, segregation would almost certainly still be enforced by “the market.”
Likewise, in regions where anti-LGBTQ religious bigots hold political sway, the market will reflect the desires of the majority population.
The market does what the majority wants it to do. That’s great if you’re part of the majority.
It sucks if you’re not.
