Gay people are LGBTQ people — and significant numbers of us gay people, potentially most of us, do not just want to imitate majority culture. Nobody is asking people to change how they raise their children — except for Republicans who are passing laws criminalizing how parents raise trans children. The rest of the brouhaha is from conservative parents demanding that their children be prevented from accessing books or other media that disagree with conservative Christian ideas and belief — as if those ideas can’t stand on their own merits.
The fight is all about conservatives working to force queer people and ideas off the public stage.
Nobody in the queer world has ever suggested that anyone must define gender in any particular way, by the way. Many of us don’t even agree among ourselves about that. But we do expect, even demand, a certain amount of civility and decency from those who disagree with our common definitions.
If you see a woman in a dress and insist she’s really a man, to the point of calling her a man and passing laws to prevent her from eliminating waste, you’re just being rude and mean spirited.
That’s not about definitions. It’s about basic decency.
