From a medical ethics point of view, this became deeply troubling. Her religious order had more than enough money to purchase morphine and other pain relieving drugs. She chose not to do that, because she wanted her patients to suffer.

She's not a saint. She was a monster. And it's really sad The society chooses to elevate such a monster to a position of the highest respect and reverence.

I don't agree with a lot of what Hitchens wrote, but in this case he was very much on target.
