For a bit of nuance here, Israel recognizes the marriages of same-sex couples who go abroad to marry. But what "recognizes" means is up for grabs. In 2020, the city of Tel Aviv passed a municipal ordinance extending to same-sex couples all the same privileges, responsibilities, and benefits the city extends to opposite-sex married couples.

This has been somewhat controversial, and it does not extend to other cities. Progress in equality for queer people is not originating from national leadership, and probably will not while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains in power. He has not been able to command a majority in popular elections, and so he is beholden politically to fringe conservative religious parties that are deeply homophobic.

Just like homophobia in the Arab world stems from horrific Muslim religious doctrines, homophobia in Israel remains officially entrenched because of homophobic religious people.

Israel has little to be proud of in this respect. They put up with disgusting religious beliefs just like most of the Arab world puts up with horrific homophobic religious beliefs.

Yes, the degrees of oppression are different, but the vile religious motivation behind the oppression is the same.
